V. was checking out our website even before R proposed. She noticed our “English Buttercup” ring and immediately fell in love with it. Her hunch about R’s intentions was spot on, and within a short time, R asked for her hand while they were on a motorcycle trip together. V was overjoyed and mentioned that buttercup might be “the” ring, but before they could come into the shop, their priorities shifted. R was in a motorcycle accident. All time, energy and finances were redirected towards healing. Several months passed. Without telling each other, they would each periodically check our website in secret to see if “buttercup” had sold, and were relieved each time to learn that she seemed to be waiting here for them. R is now sufficiently recovered (and sporting a cool mermaid handled walking stick). Today they came in, and after months of stalking buttercup online, R slipped the ring on V’s finger. All agree it’s even better than the picture, and so worth the wait. You will notice that buttercup is finally marked “sold” in our featured section.
R.P. and B.D. are avid surfers. After they came into Maloy’s and fell in love with the perfect ring, R had what seemed at the time, a brilliant and romantic plan. On their next surfing trip, he would attach the ring to the key clip on the shoulder of his wetsuit, then paddle out and propose in the waves. Let’s take a moment and think about that…
Fortunately, all those images you just imagined of the ring slipping out of his gloved hand and being tossed for a moment on a wave before sinking to the bottom of the sea? R had those visions too. He instead proposed somewhat spontaneously at a dinner gathering. B says it was perfect, and that no, she does not plan to wear her delicate Victorian diamond ring while surfing – she wants to always keep it out of Poseidon’s grasp.
A.H.H. and J.F.V. were on a lovely vacation in Italy. One day, while on a vineyard tour, they discovered a delightful little wild artichoke patch. It was so charming that J suggested they return the next day to shoot some photographs. So the next day found them frolicking in the artichokes, taking pictures and pointing out particularly pretty ones to each other. J. turned to A. and said “Ooh, here’s a special one for you”. He then proceeded to present her with a baby artichoke – one with a family heirloom engagement ring nestled in it.
A. says she was so surprised she fell down, but recovered quickly and said “yes”. She slipped the ring onto her pinky for the rest of the trip, (and brought it into Maloy’s for sizing as soon as she returned to the states).
On a final note, A. is a chef, and the one thing she knows for sure is that artichokes will figure prominently on the wedding menu.
JM and MC were college sweethearts. Things were great, but then, somehow, less so, and eventually they drifted apart. Each went on to other relationships. They moved to other parts of the country, but they held a special place in each other’s hearts. 30 years went by, but he couldn’t quite bring himself to toss out the worn copy of her graduation photo that was in his wallet. After three decades, they found each other on a classmates website. Hard to imagine what that long perspective adds. They say it has the comfort of an old connection blended with the excitement of a new relationship. Yes, they came into Maloy’s shopping for engagement rings, and yes, he still has a copy of the same photo in his wallet.
B.W. impressed us here at Maloy’s with one of the most romantic proposal plans we’ve heard in a while. Ahead of time, he made elaborate plans with a favorite secluded ski lodge in the North cascades. On Christmas morning, he faked a quick early morning errand and slipped out of their room. Friends soon arrived, and escorted his beloved, K.T. down a long hall in the lodge that had been lined with candles and framed photos of the bride to be… starting with pictures of her past, and gradually becoming more current and bringing her up to the present. At the end of the hall, in the cozy library, waited her future, in the form of B.W. and the extraordinary Edwardian platinum and diamond ring he had picked out for her.
Z.H. and K.T did things a little differently. After lots of happy time together, Z starting thinking about asking K to marry him, but he kept losing his nerve. Eventually he admitted to her that she was going to need to do the asking. The happy couple let the formalities slide, and soon she was expecting their first child. There were many long “pregnancy walks” on the beach in Santa Monica, and eventually their little bundle of joy arrived. The happy family was growing, and K decided it was time to make it official, so she bought a ring for him, and planned a family walk on the same romantic beach. Z had the baby in a front pack carrier when K asked him to check for something in one of the pockets. There, he found the ring, and she asked him to be her groom. Amidst laughter and joy, he accepted, and they are currently living happily ever after.
- A PROPOSAL TALE
J.K. Had purchased an especially lovely ring from us, and was ready to pop the question. His intention was to do it quietly, during a weekend trip to San Francisco, at the posh Top of the Mark. Alas, when they arrived, it turned out to be “carnival week”, and the atmosphere was anything but private. J. then steered his girl to the clubby, cozy bar at their hotel, hoping for a more appropriate atmosphere. They sat near the end of the long bar, facing each other. J. was nervous. He gathered his courage, and was just beginning to speak to his beloved, S, when her jaw dropped to the floor, as did the jaws of most of the other patrons glancing toward him. While dozens of people stared aghast in his general direction, J. Panicked… Did he have something in his teeth? Were people reading his mind? Was this a dream? Finally, S. pointed directly over his shoulder, to the young woman seated just behind him. This inebriated young woman, in a misguided attempt to garner the attention of the attractive bartender, had hoisted her blouse, and was displaying her assets to him.
J. And S. fled the bar, and headed up to their room, where J. finally found the serenity and romance that had proved so elusive. He proposed. She said yes.
J.K. Had found the perfect ring. As he and his beloved ate a tasty dinner she had prepared, J. feigned choking. Coughing vigorously, he covered his mouth with his hands. He gasped for air, alarming her somewhat, but then calmed his “cough”, and stared in amazement into his cupped hands, which now held the ring.
A client recently came in with a lovely vintage engagement ring in need of some repair. She shared her engagement story. It was Thanksgiving, many years ago, and her young and sweet husband to be was ready to propose. He had a plan! He was going to hide the diamond ring INSIDE the pumpkin pie. Fortunately, he chose to share his idea with his mom, who convinced him, at the last minute, to leave at least the diamond visible above the surface.
Thanks mom, for saving the moment, the ring and, quite possibly, a tooth!
K. loves to go hiking. M, due to fear of heights, not so much. Still, When K suggested a day trip up to Angel’s Rest, M agreed. As they ascended the mountain, the trail got more and more narrow, and the color began to drain from M’s face. K, recognizing that M was in distress, suggested turning off the trail into a little clearing. Little did she know M’s anxiety was caused not so much by the height, but by the fact that he was about to propose! Stepping away from the edge, and avoiding the view, M produced the ring from his pocket, a lovely vintage solitaire he had discovered a few weeks earlier at Maloy’s. They sat on the grass, and M slipped the ring onto K’s finger. It fit perfectly… on her pinky. (She wore it there happily for a few days, till they made it into the shop together to have it sized, a complimentary service on rings purchased here)
We are proud of M for making it to the top so he could take the plunge!
