A PROPOSAL TALE

K. loves to go hiking. M, due to fear of heights, not so much. Still, When K suggested a day trip up to Angel’s Rest, M agreed. As they ascended the mountain, the trail got more and more narrow, and the color began to drain from M’s face. K, recognizing that M was in distress, suggested turning off the trail into a little clearing. Little did she know M’s anxiety was caused not so much by the height, but by the fact that he was about to propose! Stepping away from the edge, and avoiding the view, M produced the ring from his pocket, a lovely vintage solitaire he had discovered a few weeks earlier at Maloy’s. They sat on the grass, and M slipped the ring onto K’s finger. It fit perfectly… on her pinky. (She wore it there happily for a few days, till they made it into the shop together to have it sized, a complimentary service on rings purchased here)

We are proud of M for making it to the top so he could take the plunge!

Stories from the Shop Floor

4/9/10
THE STORY – R.Z. Loved a ring. She came in months ago, to get a necklace repaired, spotted the Art Deco diamond ring in our case, and it was love at first sight. R. mentioned it to a friend, who wanted to see it too, so they came in together “to visit”. The friend ooh’d and ahh’d and so R. mentioned it to another friend, who wanted to check it out too. This went on for a few weeks, until the sad day that R. brought in a friend to visit “her” ring, only to find it GONE! Yes, there were a few tears.

THE TWIST – R. was one of the lucky ones. Unbeknownst to her, the ring had secretly been purchased by her fiance, (tipped off by friend #2), who held on to it for several more weeks before presenting it to a shocked and delighted, (and tearful), R.

THE MORAL – Come visit our rings as much as you like, but once you know a ring is “the one”, please put a deposit on it! Our vintage rings are one of a kind pieces. Once they go, they are gone, and until we perfect our time machine (we are working on it), we can’t travel back to 1925 to get you another one just like it.

A fun custom project

When C. of Portland was a child, he loved the shiny gold and shimmery texture of the foil wrapped around Almond Roca candy. He would fold it up into a wide strip and wrap it around his finger to “make a ring”. Fast forward about 30 years. C. is now getting ready to wear a wedding band, and Maloy’s is getting ready to make it for him. Yup, we will be replicating the shape and texture (including the words) of a candy wrapper ring in real gold. How sweet!

Update- when I mentioned this custom job to Cameron, our staff gemologist, she confessed that she used to make rings out of the same candy wrappers, but she twisted the ends on top, to make “a stone”
